London’s Roundhouse was bustling with radiant emo energy on March 12 when America’s favourite emo stars Hot Mulligan lit up the room with dominant choruses and waves of crowd surfers. The night was ecstatic with one of the most lively crowds to be seen at a show of this size.

Hot Mulligan began their ‘The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still’ tour in North America earlier in January and have been going full power ever since. Off the back of their 16-date European tour before moving on to Australia and Japan, it's a definitive sign of their relentless drive to bring their energy to crowds all over the world.

Joining Hot Mulligan at their sold-out show at London’s iconic Roundhouse was Brighton-based math-rock band Delta Sleep.

After hearing plenty of great things about Delta Sleep from friends and online, the crowd buzzed with anticipation as the band took the stage and opened with ‘Slow Burn’. The downtuned guitar blasted the venue with dark-sounding chords powered by intense drum hits. The volume seemed to escalate with every beat, and the energy in the room steadily built in preparation for Hot Mulligan.

When the band moved into ‘Old Soul’, fans lost their minds when Hot Mulligan’s own Tades Sanville came out to perform the vocals. The cheers were incredibly loud. For fans of an international band, the rare opportunity to see them live often feels surreal. Tades delivered an excellent performance of the track, fully embracing the melody's aggressive energy.

It wasn’t long after Delta Sleep finished that Hot Mulligan was minutes away from appearing. While high energy was expected, the small group of photographers realised the true scale of the excitement during a swift safety meeting regarding the influx of crowd surfers.

They opened with ‘Moving to Bed Bug Island’, the first track from the album that shares the same name as the tour. The song slowly builds from mellow vocals and restrained instrumentals into a huge chorus. It was clear the fans had been waiting all night to jump around and shout along, and the chorus came right back at the band.

Following the tracklist of the album, the crowd knew ‘And a Big Load’ was next. Such an exciting rendition of the track's constant high energy had the mosh pits flowing and the crowd surfers streaming towards the front. Shouting the lyric, “Take another minute, maybe take my life,” back at Tades alongside the crowd created an iconic and powerful moment.

Whilst watching the chaos unfold from the sidelines and the balcony was incredible, the pull of the energy from the crowd became irresistible. Despite the intensity, the Hot Mulligan crowd maintained their strong sense of community; people were quick to pick others up if they fell and made sure nobody got hurt, leaving a lasting impression of the vibe of their shows.

As the curfew approached, it became clear the band still hadn’t played two of their most iconic songs. After briefly leaving the stage, they returned for the encore and launched into ‘BCKYRD’. Knowing the night was drawing to a close, a shared feeling took over the room to give everything that was left. Even those at the bar rushed back into the crowd just to catch the last of the energy.

The last track needed no introduction. Circle pits opened up, and arms raised high to the air as the entire crowd shouted the line “Woes me,” before the guitar solo kicked in, the band trying to dodge the countless crowd surfers coming straight at them.
